Little River Pig Farm – Joe Healy
Pork for the Oliver Carty & Family traditional rasher range (excluding Cooked Streaky) is sourced exclusively from the Little River Pig Farm.
Based in Enniscorthy, Wexford, the Little River Pig Farm is owned and run by Joe Healy, a third generation pig farmer from Carlow.
Sustainability, provenance and animal welfare are at the heart of everything the Little River Pig Farm does. Feed is manufactured on-site, using natural by-products whenever possible. Barley and wheat are sourced from local farmers, never more than 10 kilometres away.
Most innovative of all perhaps, every day Joe’s team collects yeast from the distillers at Diageo in St. James’s Gate and pot ale syrup from the Midleton Distillery in Cork.
“Sustainability, provenance and animal welfare are at the heart of everything the Little River Pig Farm does.”
The yeast provides his pigs with sulphur, phosphorus, calcium, and vitamins B1, B6, B12, while the pot ale syrup, which is a by-product of malt whiskey distillation, contains a highly nutritious blend of carbohydrates, yeast residues, proteins and minerals. It’s a unique combination that helps give the Little River Pig Farm pigs a rich and juicy flavour.
Water comes from a deep bore well, ensuring quality and consistency. The animals’ shelter meanwhile is temperature monitored and, as well as plenty of space, they have toys to play with, so they’re happy as well as healthy.
